In today food-service era, convenience is everything. It is very convenient for customers to pack unfinished meals or takeout that has cooled down and reheat it directly in the microwave — no dishes to wash.
Microwaveable containers have become a standard service expectation for restaurants and delivery brands. But what actually makes a container microwave safe, and what are the other advantages beyond microwave convenience?
Not all plastic containers are the same
There are many types of food containers, and microwave-safe performance is not guaranteed by every plastic. The most important requirement is safety and non-toxicity. Containers that can be used safely in microwave ovens must be strong, heat-resistant, and should not become excessively hot after microwaving.
Food containers made of PP (polypropylene) are widely regarded as microwave-safe and food-contact safe. In contrast, polystyrene (plastic #6) and certain plastics #7 are not recommended for microwave use.
Beyond convenience
For environmentally conscious customers, microwave-safe containers are durable and can be washed, reused and reheated. If a plastic container is microwave safe, it is generally also dishwasher safe — customers can simply put it in the dishwasher with their dinner.
Microwave-safe containers are ultimately the more sustainable choice: they can be reused multiple times, reducing the waste of single-use packaging and conserving resources. At JUNYAO PACKAGING, our PP food containers are designed for safe microwave reheating as well as chilled and frozen storage.
