More and more people use disposable food containers every day, and one common question is whether they can be reused. Opinions are divided — some reuse plastic cups, boxes and spoons for a long time without issues, while others worry that plastic may release harmful substances when heated.
Not all disposable plastic is the same
The short answer: it depends on the material. Among the plastics used for lunch boxes and food containers, only PP (polypropylene) is suitable for microwave reheating and safe reuse. PP has good transparency and hardness, and can withstand temperatures up to around 110 C without releasing harmful substances into food.
One important detail: the base of a microwaveable food container is usually made of PP, but the lid may be made of PS (polystyrene). Always remove the lid before microwaving.
How to identify a reusable container
Not every disposable lunch box should be reused. Check the markings on the bottom: a QS mark means the container is safe for holding food at low temperatures, but does not guarantee microwave safety. If the container is marked microwave safe or microwave heating, it can be reheated and — after careful cleaning — safely reused.
